Died Friday, November 10, 1989, at Munising Memorial Hospital following a five
month illness.Funeral services were held Tuesday, November 14, at l0 A.M.
from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Raymond Moncher officiating
and burial was in Maple Grove Cemetery.Born in Munising on Aug 29, 1920, he
was a lifetime resident of the community.He worked for Munising Wooden Wares,
Munising Atlas Plywood and in the late 50's he began work with the Lake
Superior and Ishpeming Railroad before retiring as a Section Foreman in 1965.
He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus,
Roderick Prato American Legion Post, Chatham VFW, Munising Senior Citizens
Club, Alger County Historical Society and Brotherhood of Railroad Retirees.
Francis served in the Civil Conservation Corps at Camp Evelyn prior to
entering the Army.During WWII, he was a sergeant in the Army Air Corps,
stationed at headquarters of the AAF Fighter Wing in Britain where he received
a special commendation from General M. C. Woodbury,. Wing Commander, for
initiative and spirit on the first anniversary of the Wing's arrival in Europe.
They were active in bombing and strafing German troops in France and in
escorting bombers on raids over France and Germany.
