William GLADMAN, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Ann GLADMAN was born inLondon c.1802. On the 22th of February 1822 he was Tried at the Middlesex Gaol Deliveryfor stealing two yards of canvas value 1s., and a sack value 1s., the goods of Benjamin HULL of Stepney, Middlesex. He was sentenced to 7 years transportation. At the time he was living with his mother, a washer woman, at Kingsland Road, and his trade was an Errand boy with a cart, working for John Kimbley, of Shoreditch, near London. He was described as, 20 years of age, 5' 1 3/4" in height with light brown hair and eyes. He was on the "Retribution" hulk at Sheerness before being transported on the 26th of April 1823 to Van Diemans Land, aboard the "Commodore Hayes", arriving at Hobart Town on the 16th of August 1823. The voyage had taken 112 days and 3 of the 219 male convicts aboard had died at sea.
On the 29th of April 1834 at Brighton, Tasmania, William married Rhoda HURST, daughter of William HURST and Mary KEEP from the Parish of Green Point ,Tasmania William and Rhoda were to have 16 children in all, Thomas, Elizabeth Ann, Sarah Ann, Samuel, William, twins Frederick and Alfred, Emma, Mary, Joseph, Henry, Charles, John, James, Robert Leslie, and Eliza Ann.
William, Rhoda and their family left Tasmania and sailed across to Victoria, sometime between 1849 and 1851, there they made their home in Winchelsea, 23 miles west of Geelong. William died on the 12th of December 1885 at Winchelsea, the cause of his death was "Cirrhosis Hepatitis", of which effects he is thought to havesuffered from for a couple of years. Rhoda died on the 6th of April 1894 also at Winchelsea. Both are buried at the Winchelsea Cemetery.

CHARLES, born 1849 at Launceston, Tasmania, married Sarah Jane MORGAN, (younger sister of Angelina & Margaret) on the 9th August, 1875, Winchelsea, Victoria. They had 1 child.
JOHN, born 1851 at Geelong, Victoria, married Isabel Maldon CAMPBELL on the 15th September, 1880 at St. Thomas's Church of England, Winchelsea. They had 2 children.

William Gladman arrived in Hobart on the 16 August 1823 aboard the "Commodore Hayes".William aged 20 was a convict, and his native place was listed as Nortens Folgate, and religion as C/E.
William was a Convict.
William as far as we were able to find out was born in London 1801 or 1802.He was arrested for theft of a sack valued at one shilling.He stated that he was a barrow boy and a native of Norten's Folgate.
On the birth certificates of his children born in Victoria (early 1850s) his birth place was listed as "London".He was arrested 22 February, 1822 and tried 5 March 1822 (3rd session page 230).He reported age 21, married, living with his mother (a washerwoman) in Kingsland Road Norten's Folgate.
He was sentenced to seven years transportation and arrived per the "Commodore Hayes" 6 August 1823 to Hobart V.D.L.(Van Diemans Land).His behavior on the hulk and on his way out was orderly and there were no offences recorded against him in the colony.
In the census of 1848 William and his family were living at New Norfolk, Tasmania.In the Victorian Directory of 1851 William Gladman was listed at Corio Street, Geelong, Victoria.
William was married to Rhoda Hurst on 20 April 1834 at Brighton V.D.L. and they had 16 Children between 1833 - 1858.

Robert Christian - I am an officer of Mile End.On Sunday morning at 1/4 past 6 o'clock I saw the prisoner and another lad at the back of Hull's house; the other one got over the rail, and handed something over to the prisoner with the bag, containing the sack and canvas.
Benjamin Hull - They are mine, I lost them out of my garden on 22nd February.
Prisoners Defence - I found them.
Guilty - age 20 years.Transported 7 years.

The 1848 census for the New Norfolk district lists William Gladman living in a wooden house owned by Ebenezer Geiss (the Geiss' owned exclusive property at Bridgewater).The household consisted of a married man aged between 45 and 60 who was an emancipist, a married woman aged between 21 and 45 who had arrived free, ten children all born in the colony - one male under 2 years,four males and one female between 2 and 7, one male and two females between 7 and 14.There was also an unmarried male emancipist aged between 21 and 45. All were Church of England.

In answer to your letter of 11 January, I enclose some notes on William Gladman which were compiled for a previous enquirer.
I have Been unable to find out when William married Rhoda Hurst, however, Rhoda could be the daughter of Wiliam Hurst ( see Xerox copy enclosed) who was residing in the Broadmarsh District.
Sarah Ann, Daughter of William and Rhoda Gladman was Baptized by Archdeacon Hutchins at St Marks on 28 January 1837.
