Jose Dario Arguello was born Bet. 1753 - 1754 in Queretaro, Mexico, and died 1827 in San Francisco, CA.He married Maria Ygnacia Moraga on Abt. 1780 in Altar, Mexico, daughter of Josef Ignacio Moraga and Barbara Arbisu. Notes for Jose Dario Arguello: Commander of the Presidio of Monterey, Ca.He was appointed by Governor Fages the then governor of Lower California to give possession to the colonists living in the area in September 4, 1786.At the time, he was living in Santa Barbara.he abandoned a indefinite tract along the San Mateo County coast, given to him in 1797.It was called Rancho Las Pulgas.He was the first to make land grants in LA. he accompanied Rivera on his march over land to the Colorado River where Rivera was killed in an uprising by Yuman Indians.arguello continued on to San Gabriel Mission where he remained until the founding of Santa Barbara presidio in April of 1782. In 1787 Arguello was appointed Lt. of the presidial company of San Francisco.He served two terms as comandante of San Fran Presidio 1787-1791 and 1796-1806.he then became the commandante of the Presidio of Santa Barbara from 1807 until 1815.He became the acting Gov. of Alta California after the death of Gov. Arillaga in 1814.He served 34 years and was one of the best known and most influential men in California at that time. He did not remain in California after his retirement but moved to Baja, California and served as Governor there until 1822.He died in Guadalajara in 1828 at the age of 75.
