He moved to New Mexico in 1890.This is where he found out about the big red chilies.He returned to CA with his chilie seeds and lived with his family Ventura County.
Founded the Ortega Chili Packing company in 1898 now the Ortega Chilie Canery.It is now the site of Capitol Milling Company.It was located on the corner of 6th and Santa FeAve. The chief instrument of the his business a the beginning was a roaster worked by hand.Later he improved a roaster which he patented.In 1900 he moved his plant to LA located at 811 Stephens Ave.1901 he moved it to 348 S. Alameda St. and finally in 1905 to Sixth and Santa fe.His plant was most likely the largest plant in the Western United States at the time.1946, The family sold the company.As of 1995, it is owned by Nestle Corporation.
