BARRON PIONEER LAID TO REPOSE
Mrs. O.P. BAGLEY One Of Few White Women In This Region In 1874
Mrs. Orastus P. BAGLEY, whose funeral was held last week, was one of the earliest pioneers of Barron county. She came here with the family in 1874, and settled on a homestead in section 12, in what is now Clinton township, some six miles north of Barron. There were few white women in the region at that time.Barron was merely a logging camp owned by John Quaderer.Judge A.F. Wright, who took a homestead near them in 1875, remembers buying butter from them when he was living in his shack as a bachelor.
For a short period, the BAGLEY family lived in a little log cabin n Barron just south of Quaderer creek, and west of the old Quaderer hotel which is still standing.Mrs. Charles S. Taylor well remember hearing Mrs. BAGLEY call to Arthur, then a young boy, when he wandered too near the creek.Other white women living in Barron at that time were Mrs. Jim Deering, wife of the hotel Proprietor, Mrs. George Washington Bird, wife of the county treasurer, Mrs. Battise Quaderer, and Mrs. Alvah Dewey, wife of the Shield editor.
The BAGLEY family continued to make their home on the homestead until about 1888, when they moved to the City of Barron.Later they acquired a place southwest of the city, in Arland township where Mrs. BAGLEY died.Mr. BAGLEY died on Dec. 12, 1916.
