Notes for Fred Beaver:
He was employed as a dairyman for the Co-operative Society when he enlisted in the Grenadier Guards at Nottingham on November 13, 1915. Given the number 24512, he was posted to Caterham, in Surrey. After completing his basic training, he was posted to the British Expeditionary Force in France on June 11, 1916. On September 10, 1916, he received a gun-shot wound to the chest during one of the battles of the Somme (possibly during the small scale battle around Flers-Courcelette). He was transferred home to recover five days later and only returned to France on April 1, 1918. He was posted back home again on May 27, 1918, and assigned to the Moorgreen Colliery (also known as the High Park Colliery) at Eastwood, in Nottinghamshire. He was finally discharged as a guardsman on December 14, 1918. After the war he was employed as a coal miner at the Moorgreen Colliery. He and Annie initially lived at Mill Road, Eastwood, but later moved to nearby Dovecote Road. During the Second World War a heart attack forced him to give up coal mining altogether, and he found employment packing munitions. He also became a lay preacher, but his religious fervour did not go down too well with other members of the family. After further periods of employment he eventually retired and died in 1970. He and Annie had four children.
