Bernard Pratte, Sr.
Bernard Pratte, son of Jean Baptiste Pratte and Marie Anne Lalumundiere.He became a trader on the Mississippi, maintaining stores in St. Louis and Ste. Genevieve, Missouri and regularly traveled to the East on business.He amassed a fortune in the fur trade and held many important civic positions in St. Louis.
Gen. Bernard Pratt built the first business house on the Levee.It was located on the corner of Market and Front Streets.At this time there were only two warehouses in the city, one built by McKnight & Brady, and situated on the river bank, north of Cherry St., and the other built by Manuel Lisa, on the south side of Chestnut and the Levee.
