Notes for THOMAS FOOTE:
Notes From The Research of Judy Foote:
" It's my belief is Thomas and Elizabeth Foote are the original couple to
settle at Burin and that all other Foote's in the Burin region stem from
them. From reading the academic stuff on the settlement of that area
Thomas and Elizabeth fit right in.According to Grant Head's book,
Eighteenth Century Newfoundland, the area around Burin had a growth
spurt around the time Thomas and Elizabeth started having their family.
Before that period there are been a decline in the small population that
was when a lot of people moved to Cape Breton/Nova Scotia region because
of problems in the fishery.Apparently the 1790s was a bad time for all
of Newfoundland and a lot of people were forced to move elsewhere in
order to survive.Sound familiar? Unfortunately as the church records
for that area don't begin before 1815, or there about, we will probably
never find documentation on the early births and marriage of this
family. There was a Church of England missionary who traveled this
coast around 1810, but his records are in such bad shape, and his
recording keeping was so poor, it is almost impossible to read.I have
had a couple of tries, but I have given it up as a bad cause. It's
really maddening as he is reported to have performed a large number of
baptisms. The next records are those of the Methodist which began in
1815.I guess this is why most of the Foote's for Burin are of the
United Church faith; it was only later in the 1890s when the Salvation
Army were established that you see some individuals converting to this
faith. "
