JOHN HAMER:
1650 - Named in court records of Yorktown, VA. as beneficiary of his brother Humphrey Hamer. Humphrey mentioned in records as early as 1639
This is from the following book:
THE HISTORY OF HAMER: THE ORIGINS OF THE NAME AND A LANCASHIRE FAMILY by Geoffrey Hamer
Page 24 quotes James Butterworth's AN HISTORICAL & TOPOGRAPHICAL ACCOUNT OF THE TOWN AND PARISH OF
ROCHDALE IN LANCASHIRE, published in 1828:
"Crossing the rich and fertile grounds, we arrive at Hamer Hall, an elegant mansion of brick; the
road from Rochdale to Littleborough is but a short remove from hence, with the next village of
Heybrook.
"Hamer Hall, not a century ago, was inhabited by one of the local name who resided here, in and
prior to the reign of Edward IV and George Hamer, Esq., resided here about half a century ago. Some
cottages lying on the banks of the river Roche, bear the name of Hamer Mill, with other dwellings
called Hamer Mill Lane.the word Hamer is perhaps derived from Ham, (Saxon,) a village or small
place, and 'mer' or 'mere', a stand or pool of water."
THE HISTORY OF HAMER explains that Robert de Hamer in 1380 probably had a dwelling on the site of
the Hall during the second half of the 14th century. The reign of Edward IV was from 1461 to 1483.
Now quoting the Geoffrey Hamer book, page 22:
"Henry Hamer of Hamer, born 1485, first indicated the existence of the place in his Will dated 18th
January 1572/3.He was obviously a wealthy and prosperous man, as he owned land, a water driven
corn mill and several other notable items listed in his Will.At about this time Hamer Hall was
built, almost certainly by Henry and probably between 1550 and 1570.It was later rebuilt in 1755
according to Fishwick, when evidence of Elizabethan feathers were found.Unfortunately it was
demolished in Jauary or February 1908 when an article appeared in the local newspaper to the
effect."
(Geoffrey Hamer writes that Fishwick is Lieutenant-Colonel Henry Fishwick F.S.A., one of Rochdale's
most eminent historians).
Are there any on this list who are Hamers IN England?
Has anyone done any research on Ralph Hamer, Sr, who invested heavily, along with his son, Ralph
Hamer, Jr., in the Virginia Company and Jamestown?
