In 1856 Thomas, his wife and her siblings petitioned the court to make a division and partition of the slaves of the late Daniel Bourdeaux, father of Thankful (Bordeaux) and her siblings. Below is the text of that petition.

Ordered that Maurice C Collins, Major T Croom & and James P Moore be appointed a committee to divide the slaves belonging to the estate ofDaniel Bourdeaux, amonghis heirs at law and allot to each heir, his or her share in severalty and report to the next term of this Court.

To the worshipful the Justices of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions March Term 1857. We the undersigned Fricholders appointed by the Court of Please and Quarter Sessions December Term 1856 having been duly sworn proceeded on the 29th December AD 1856 to Divide and partition between and among Thos B Mathews and his wife Thankful, William M Hansley and his wife Hannah A and Margaret P Bunting heirs at law of Daniel Bourdeaux Decd and tenants in common of certain Negro slaves to wit; Dick, Sam, Sophia, Peter, Hannah and Dolly and allot and assign to each their share in severalty as follows,
Lot No 1 consisting of Sam and Dolly Val. $1125
Lot No 2 consisting of Sophia and Peter Val. $1200
Lot No 3 consisting of Dick and Hannah Val. $1125
Lot No one is drawn by Thos B Mathews and wife Thankful
Lot No two is drawn by Margaret P Bunting
Lot No three is drawn by William M Hansley and wife Hannah A
Lot No two pays to Lot No one and three Twenty Five Dollars each
