Dear Sister:
I recieved a letter from your son Edgar telling me of the
death of his father.The news came very unexpectedly to me for
I have been thinking a great deal about him all winter and
wishing I was so I could make you a visit, picturing to myself
how I would enjoy it.I did not stay long enough when I was
there 7 years ago, but how little we know when death will over
take us.I had thought he would live to a good old age but
everything I suppose is for the best but we can't see it that
way.I wrote to Sister Jane and Cassius Sias.He is in
Galveston, TX, though i uppose you wrote to Jane.I have not
had a letter from her for some time.
I noticed Edgar's letter was dated at Forest (Hill) City,
Mi, but mailed at some town in IL so don't know where to direct
a letter to him.You can write a letter to him and also to me
telling his P. O. address.You know the Siases arepoor hands
to write and keep track of each other.Do all the cousuns
still live there yet?Did you write Edgar Burnett?I don't
know much about Sister Delinda's children.We are so well
taken up with the cares of life, that the most of us don't do
much writing to thier cousins or other friends.When all is
done what is this life anyway?It is only work from the cradle
to the grave.My wife sends her kind wishes with myself

The 1870 Federal Census lists John C. Sias and Mary Sias living in Jasper Township, Midland Co. Michigan, right next door to a John Sias 74 born Vt, Lucetta (?) 72, born NY.These are John's parents.Also with John and Mary are Jessie, 1 month, and Cora Small,15, MI, listed as domestic servant.If this Cora is the daughter of Mary and John Fillmore Small that would mean Mary had her at 12 years old. There is a John Small, 13, listed in the same household as John A. and George Sias (Mary's brothers) in the 1870 Federal Census. It may be that John Small had 2 young children when he married Mary and that on his death she made sure they were taken care of even when she started a new family.I have also found in Gratiot Co. (the county where John Small, 13, lives) three other young Smalls living with families of different surnames:

Philemon ", 18, Michigan, working farm
Seville, Gratiot Co.;

Is it possible that these are all children of John Small who married Mary Sias?
From Bruce W. Badgrow:"There was a Cora Small and a Cora Sias. The 1880 Census shows a daughter Cora, age 14, living with John C and Mary Sias in Jasper Township. This is where the 1865 birth date probably came from. As John and Mary were not married until 1868, this Cora Sias may have been John's daughter by a previous marriage."
I have not found a Cora Small or Cora Sias of the right age in the 1870 census in Michigan.
