JOHN AND MABEL LIVED IN AMES ABOUT THREE YEARS, WHERE JOHN WAS IN THE HARDWARE BUSINESS WITH OTHERS.JOHN AND BROTHER CHRIST EACH PURCHASED A 160 ACRE FARM IN WINNEBAGO COUNTY, THREE MILES NORTHEAST OF BUFFALO CENTER, IOWA.RICHARD AND ESTHER WERE BORN IN AMES AND MARY, CALVEN, DWIGHT AND RICHARD CAME ALONG AT BUFFALO CENTER.JOHN MOVED TO SHELDAHL, IOWA IN MID YEAR OF 1920.THEY OWNED 100 ACRES THREE MILES SOUTHWEST OF TOWN.THERE WAS A FLOWING WELL ON THE PLACE WITH A LITTLE STREAM TO CARRY THE OVERFLOW FROM THE WELL.
THE 10 ACRES WHERE THEY LIVED, AND ALMOST IN THE TINY TOWN, HAD AN 80 ACRES ADJOINING IT ON THE NORTH TO MAKE 190 ACRES THEY OWNED, AT LEAST IN PART.THE 10 ACRES WAS BLESSED WITH A BIG HOUSE.THERE WERE THREE BEDROOMS UPSTAIRS, TUCKED UP UNDER THE ROOF TO MAKE SLANTING SIDES ON THE ROOMS.THERE WERE TWO DOUBLE BEDS IN EACH OF TWO BIG ROOMS.THE NORTH ROOM HAD ONE DOUBLE BED.OVER THE KITCHEN THE ATTIC WAS LOW AND WAS USED TO DRY SEED CORN AND FOR STORAGE.DOWNSTAIRS THE HOUSE SPREAD OUT WITH APPENDAGES OF A KITCHEN ON THE WEST, A SUMMER KITCHEN OUT TOWARD THE NORTH AND TO THE EAST WAS THE PARLOR.THERE WERE THREE SMALL PORCHES.
THEY HAD 10 OR 12 COWS, MILK WAS SOLD IN TOWN AND SURPLUS WAS FED TO THE CALVES AND PIGS.THEY CHURNED CREAM FOR USE AND SOLD THE REST TO THE CREAMERY AT SLATER.THE HOUSE WAS HEATED BY HEATING STOVES AND THE KITCHEN RANGE.THEY GOT ELECTRICITY IN 1920.THE CELLAR WAS DEEP, CLEAN, COOL, AND WHITE WASHED.THEY CANNED BEEF, PORK, TOMATOES, STRING BEANS AND FRUIT THEY RAISED. THEY HAD SOUR RED CHERRY TREES, MULBERRY TREES, APPLES, WALNUTS, GRAPES, STRAWBERRIES,AND RASPBERRIES."SAD" IRONS WERE HEATED ON THE KITCHEN RANGE.
