Cabaniss came to Tuscaloosa Co, AL with his father William Cabaniss.Peter R. and wife Catherine deeded land 27 Jan 1827 in Tuscaloosa Co, AL. Book F, p.152. Peter R is listed in will of William as son, 8 May 1825. In Tuscaloosa County, AL Deed Book F p. 10, Peter and Ezekial Mayfield witnessed a deed.According to Dr. Allen Cabaniss, Professor of History, University of Mississippi, Peter's wife Catherine was from a South Carolina family which intermarried several times with the Shirleys and Powells.Peter R. Cabaniss died intestate in 1839 or early 1840 and his and Catharine's affairs were tied up in the courts for the next decade or longer.The children were first made wards of their maternal uncle, Obadiah Mayfield, and later of David Johnston.The final settlement of the estate came in 1853.The descent of Peter Randolph Cabaniss through Sophia Sherwin from William Randolph and Dorothy Lane appears in two books by Wassell Randolph:Henry Randolph 1st (1623-1673) of Henrico Co, VA (Memphis: Cossitt Library, 1952) and Pedigree of the Descendants of Henry Randolph 1st (1623-1673) of Henrico Co, VA (Memphis: Public Library System, 1957).
