A group of Lawrence descendants pooled their money to hired an English genealogist to find out more about Margaret Lawrence. About all that was found was a Transportation Bond dated 9 March 1730 in which Margaret and nine others were convicted of several thefts and larcenies and transported for fourteen years. The nature of the crimes are not known as court documents that period of time.
On the other hand, a descendant of Margaret's says, in an apparently unmailed latter,
John, your request almost shames me....
Our name comes to us a little out of the order of things. My great grandmother called herself Lawrence and I have been told that she emigrated from Europe in the early part of the last century to old Virginia, and was there sold to a tobacco planter owning a plantation 8 or 10 miles from home for seven years to pay her passage. Her master settled her at that out place, she being almost his wife and remained there united. She raised two sons. John, I think was the eldest and Thomas was my grandfather. He was uneducated but was a man of good mind. He spelled his name Laurence.
I have been told that Great Grandmother sought every opportunity to come to America and consented to be sold. No doubt server family oppression drove her.

The group of Lawrence descendants that pooled their money to hire an English genealogist in the early 1980s was assembled and coordinated by Robert Lawrence of Wichita, Kansas. The extensive research resulting from that turned up at least eight different Margaret Lawrences living in the London area at that time who were of an age that they could have been "their" Margaret. A Margaret Lawrence born in 1709 at Wem, England, was the easiest to document of any of those identified. However, Margaret Lawrence was just too common a name in that time and place to positively connect Margaret of Wem to Margaret of Tobias Phillip's plantation.
As well, several people were arrested and tried for the same crimes as Margaret. Robert directed the researchers to trace as many of those as could be found to see if there was any link between them and Margaret. No connection was found. The researchers concluded that any further search would be fruitless without further information about Margaret to narrow the search. An option would have been to trace the lives of each of the known Margaret Lawrences. Any found to be still residing in England after 1730 could not be the Margaret Lawrence who was sent to America. However, such a project would likely be very expensive, would probably not narrow the search down to one possible Margaret Lawrence, and would not be conclusive enough as there could still be other Margaret Lawrences other than the eight that had been found.

Margaret Lawrence was indicted on a felony charge of thievery in London, England,on July 9, 1729. On February 25th, 1730, she was tried and convicted in the Hall of Justice of "Old Bailey" and, in her sentence, was given "His Majesty's royal mercy on condition of transprtation to some parts of America for a spare of fourteen years." Margaret's transportation bond was issued March 9th, 1730.
Margaret was one of 106 prisoners from Newgate Prison who Jonathan Forward contracted to transport to Maryland on the "Patapscoe Merchant," Darby Lux, Captain, March 17th, 1730. On arrival in Baltimore, Maryland, 94 prisoners had survived. There, Tobias Phillips purchased Margaret's bond, entitling hin to fourteen years of service. Margaret did not live out her bond, likely dying before 10 Sept, 1739 (date of Tobias Phillip's will, in which neither she nor her bond were not mentioned.)

"Margaret "Peggy" Lawrence, presumed fourth child of Thomas and Mary Peploe Lawrence (d.1729). Margaret was christened on 10 April 1709 at the nearby Battlefield Parish Church. As a young woman, about 19-20 years old, she was banished from Wem, in the County of Shropshire, England, because she left the Church of England for the Puritan Faith. "
