Notes for WILLIAM CAMPBELL:
William Campbell, a Scotsman, was born 23 Jan. 1718 according to the date on his tombstone at Bergenfield, NJ., and came from Ulster, Ireland. He married 19 August 1736 at Sch., Elizabeth Demarest, bp. 3 April 1715 at Hackensack, NJ, daughter of David Demarest and Matie DeBaun.William died 9 October 1793 and Elizabeth died 9 July 1797.Both are buried at the South Church, Bergenffield, NJ.
The fact that he married at the age of 18 years, singifies that he emigrated probably when in his early teens and could not have been in the country very long when he married. He may have come to Old Bridge (now New MIlford) iin Bergen Co., to work for David Demarest whose daughter, Elizabeth, he married. He had an education before or after he came to America, since he wrote a good hand as evidenced by his signature to his Will. His sons also received an education, since they too always signed their names in full and were actively engaged in their trades. The Old Bridge was an active business place long beforethe Revolutionary War, from which a large amount of shipping was made via the Hackensack River. The Campbells lived near the east bank of the river, close to the traffic and trade of this busy center.During the Rev. War William lost a long list of goods and chattels, seized by the Bristish Enemy as evidenced by the British Damage Claim, page 299 # 16, on file in the N.J. State Library.Amount of the claim was over 409 L.His Will is on file at Trenton, book of Wills #33 page 151.
The Campbell name, without saying, is a common one and although William lived and died in Bergen County, N.J., it was not too long before some of his descendants had gone to New York City and elsewhere. There were other contemporary Campbell families in Bergen Co., and Rockland Co., N.Y. , adjacent, not to mention any number in New York City. The problem of similiar names in different families appears early and for this reason some fo the descendants cannot be identified and traced further.A number of children in the early families probably died in infancy or childhood as was common in those days. This will account for some but not all.
It seems apparent that William Campbell did not come to America alone, but was accompanied by one brother and two sisters, as far as is known.Their names appear in contemporary records and with the Old Bridge area, and were definitely of William's generation.
