My earliest known Carter is William D. Carter, who married Eleanor Lemmon in Harrison County, Indiana in 1819.Census records indicate he was born in 1796 in North Carolina, and I would very much like to find his ancestors and siblings. One of his sons, my great grandfather, Francis Marion Carter and wife Ellen Strong, settled in Howard County, Nebraska in 1884.Family tradition says North Carolina relatives visited them there, but apparently nobody recorded anything about the visit. My grandfather, Martin Larsen Djernes, emigrated from Thisted county, Denmark at age 14 in 1892, settling in Hamilton County, Nebraska. He married Christine Marie Nielsen, whose parents had come separately from Denmark in the 1880s.Some of Martin's siblings emigrated and some remained in Denmark. We have met quite a few relatives on the both sides of the Atlantic, and enjoy exploring our common heritage.Danish parish records document the family back to the 1600s.The next Djernes Reunion will be in Aurora, Nebraska July 12-14, 2000. Until recently, the earliest Damewood we knew of was Malachi in Botetourt County, Virginia.Recent research indicates that Malachi and brother Boston were born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1742 and 1754 respectively.Parents Heinrich and Anna Gisseler Demuth emigrated from Schaffhausen Canton, Switzerland in 1742.The name took on various spellings, all of which sounded pretty much alike in German, from Deuth to Tamewood to Damewood.Heinrich (now Henry) and family evidently took the Warrior Path to Frederick County, Virginia in the 1750s/1760s; later Melchior, who became Malachi, and Sebastian, who became Boston, continued down the Wagon Road to Botetourt County.Malachi packed up the whole family except for son James, who had married Mary (Polly) Huffman, and went to Knox County, Tennessee in 1803.James was my husband's third great grandfather. My husband's Hoover line comes out of Washington, DC, and J. Edgar Hoover is in the family tree. The earliest ancestor we know of, William Hoover, was born in Maryland about 1804, and said his parents were from Pennsylvania. We would very much like to discover the origins of this line.My husband's great grandfather, Dr. Clayton A. Hoover, and wife Johanna E. Claxton, went west to Idaho in 1882.Consequently, we don't know much about the descendants of their siblings, and we would like to hear about them.A big unsolved family mystery is what happened to Clayton and Johanna's eldest son, Edward C. Hoover, born in 1877 in Washington, DC.We think he got married in Idaho to Sarah Nehleen in 1905, but we are not sure. We would be very happy to hear from any relatives, no matter how remote, and are happy to share information. |
