Charles grew up in Dallas Township, Luzerne County, PA and worked in a tannery there.Charles and Mary lived on a farm in Monroe Township, Wyoming County, PA.Charles was a harness maker and a farmer.They had 7 children before Oct. 10, 1862 when Charles enlisted in the Union Army to fight the civil war.Their oldest child, Richard Penn, was 9 years old and baby Mary Jane was 9 days old; three other children were living.While Charles served in the war his wife, Mary Jane, took care of the farm, the orchard, and the 5 children.
Charles was a Private in Company G of the 143rd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Volunteers (he's listed as Charles D. Remer).The regiment trained at Camp Luzerne at what is now the corner of Kelly Street and Bennett Street in Luzerne.On Nov. 7, 1862, they traveled by railroad, in cattle cars, to Harrisburg.Then they were sent to guard the nation's capital.They camped near Fort Slocum, on the northern side of Washington D.C.
Early into the war, Charles developed rheumatism, and probably other ailments, possibly due to the livin g conditions.There was often no fresh food or clean water, nor did they have any clean, dry clothing.The soldiers camped in muddy, wet fields and marched in the rain.Charles spent much of his time in various army hospitals and was probably not with Company G when they fought in the Battle of Gettysburg in July 1863.Charles survived 3 years of enlistment.
On June 12, 1865, while stationed near Manhattan at Hart Island, New York, they were released from duty.The company returned to Harrisburg and collected their pay.They were officially discharged on June 20, 1865 in Wilkes-Barre.
Charles returned to his family and fathered 4 more children.He died on Nov. 3, 1897 and is buried at Beaumont Cemetary.His wife, Mary Jane, died in 1900.
