CARROLL, DEMPSEY, Private, NC Militia, Pension # S 32161
Soldier appeared before the justices of Wilcox Co, ALA, on 29 Jan 1833 to apply for military service pension. He declared that he was born 22 Dec 1762 in Duplin Co (now Sampson area) & was living there when he enlisted in the militia. He received pay voucher # 1677 from the Wilmington District. In NC Army Accounts Vol. V, Bk 176, he received voucher # 3483 for 9/0/2 pounds.
Soldier appeared on the 1784 Sampson Co Tax List as being taxed fro 639 acres & for 3 free white polls.
After the War, DEMPSEY moved to South Carolina & later to Wilcox Co, ALA. An ELIAS CARROLL signed an affidavit for the soldier, but no relationship was stated. Soldier was placed on the pension roll 25 July 1834 at $20 per annum & it was back dated to 4 March 1831. We found no record of the total amount he drew before his death.

***Note (by Whit Athey) – I disagree with the Bizzell statement, “Soldier appeared on the 1784 Sampson Co Tax List as being taxed for 639 acres & for 3 free white polls.” I believe that person was Dempsey, Sr., because he later sold land that seemed to be the same land for which the early grants were issued. Most of the deeds for land sold are recorded by the clerk as Dempsey Carrell, Sr. or Dempsey Carrell, Jr.
