Notes for AARON ROYSE:
Howard N. Camp notes:
Written by Aaron Royse in 1806:
I was born at a place or country called "The Highlands of New York."
I was married in 1759.Moses, the only child of this wife, was born in 1761 in the Highlands of New York. His mother died when he was one year old.
I was married again in September 1763.When Moses was 14 years old, we all moved to the state of Virginia. We came by water and landed at Alexandria.
Note: I. H. C. Royse wrote:The oldest actual record we have of our family is a memorandum made by Aaron Royse, my great grandfather, who was a son of our first Moses Royse. This memorandum was made by him in 1806 for my fathers sister, Mary Royse, and is dated and signed by him.I also have Aaron Royse's family Bible, which contains his family record. From them and later records of undoubted authority I have made up the following account of our family.
Among the traditions of the family that came from Aaron Royse to my father and from him to me I will mention that Aaron was a soldier in (George) Washington's command in General Braddock's Campaign against Fort DuQuesnes now Pittsburgh, and was in the battle known as "Braddock's Defeat" on July 9, 1755.He was head quarter-teamster for General Braddock and drove the wagon that carried the specie for payment of the army expenses, and that on the morning of the battle, the general being fearful of disaster, sent one of his staff with Aaron into a pond in a creek bottom, and sunk the bags of gold and silver in the mud and water. As nearly all the English were destroyed probably he was the only survivor who knew of that incident, and he never knew what became of the money.
Aaron Royse married a second wife in 1763, of which marriage the following children were born: See Family Group record.
Mary married a man named Dunbar, whose descendants went to Rock Island, Illinois.
Solomon, Hiram, and William emigrated to Kentucky, about the year 1800 or a little later, and settled in central Kentucky.
Hiram lived in Nicholas county in 1826.
Descendants of Solomon Royse are found in various parts of Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois.
It is understood that Hiram and William also left children, and perhaps their descendants may be found all through the Southwest.
Aaron with his family, at the same time not now known, removed from Alexandria to Hampshire County, Virginia.Aaron lived on the East side of the Cheat River, where he died in March, 1818, he and his wife being buried in a Country graveyard three or four miles from Kingwood.

Michael E. Dobson notes:
West Virginia officially became a state 20 Jun 1863.All events taking place in West Virginia counties prior to that date will be listed as located in the state of Virginia.
From Vivian Merae of Fleming County, KY via Malcom Royse of Winchester, KY and Dolores Rutherford:
A statement by Aaron Royse in 1806 to his Grand-daughter Mary Royse CORE (Cope). " My father Moses Royse was born June 6, 1700 and lived in the state of New York.He was married in 1725 and he had 2 sons by his first wife, John & Daniel. They both settled in Somerset County, Pa. He was married again to my mother in 1732.I was born in 1734 and my sister was born in 1736.I was born at a place called 'The Highlands of New York'.My father and mother were going on a journey on horseback when he heard something that made him think Indians were near.He sent mother thru a bypath he thought more safe, but in a few minutes he heard her scream. He took me by the arm and set me down in a thicket of brush and said "keep still" but I was so frightened I hollered and my father caught me up again and went in pursuit of mother---but, we never saw or heard of her or my sister again. My sister was 6 years old at the time and I was 8 at the time.We lived in the Highlands of N.Y. and followed Indian trading.I was married in 1759 (Aaron leaves out his early life part of which he spent in the Colonial Militia with General Braddock in 1755).My son Moses was the only child of this wife born in 1761 in the Highlands of N.Y.His mother died when he was one year old.I was married again in September 1763.When Moses was 14 years old (1775) we all moved to the state of Virginia. We came by water and landed at Alexandria."
The above statement casts serious doubts on there being a third child of Moses(4), Moses, for the line Moses(5), Abiram(6), Squire(7), William(8), etc.Alternatively, the birthyear given by Aaron for his father, Moses, as 1700 casts serious doubt on his grandparents being John Royce and Sarah Perigo. If indeed Aaron's father is not the son of John and Sarah, then it is likely that the line John(3), Moses(4) b. 1689, Moses(5) b abt 1718, Abiram(6) is correct and a different lineage for Aaron's father has yet to be discovered.
