Notice printed September 2, 1940:
"Jordan Bowen, of this place, who had been seriously ill, passed away Friday and was laid to rest at Napleon Saturday afternon."
There is no marker at the cemetery for Jerd, but he is buried immediately to the right of his wife (your right if you're facing the graves) whose marker reads "Julia Bowen."
Jerd gave 40 acres to Warren & Ophelia. Manus bought Seth's 40 acres west of there (where Manus' family - the Mitchums & the Moons - still live).
In addition to about 160 acres owned in Woodland, AL, he also owned about 160 acres in the Friendship Community, now known as Napoleon.
He owned a country store in Randolph County.
Only had one eye. Family legend has it that he lost it around age 16 fighting against the Ku Klux Klan. Family stories also say he was a Klan member at one time, but then left the Klan.
A recently found notebook has a version written by his granddaughter, as toldto her by Jerd. I'll post the wholething later, but basically it says it wasthe result of a stupid gun accident when he was about 5 years old - sounded like the fault of his older brothers.
Apparently Jerd was quite the storyteller. Most likely, he had numerous versions of the story about how he lost his eye.
I have had real trouble pinning down a birth year for Jerd. The 1910 census says he was born in March of 1861, but other sources make me think he was alittle older than that.[william_bowen.ged]
