Born around 1834 in Ireland. He was the son of Patrick Cunningham, a coal miner, and Rose Quinn. Married Mary Campbell in July 1854 in St Mary’s Chapel Glasgow (from Jane’s birth certificate) from IGI the marriage was on the 20th August 1854 in Glasgow. At the time of the 1871 census he was living in Napiers Square, New Stevenston with his wife, 3 sons (James 16, William 13 and John 3) and 4 daughters(Mary 10, Elizabeth 7, Rofsan(?) 5 and Jane 1). His occupation at this time was a coal miner and all the children were born in Glasgow(the eldest sons) or Bothwell. At the time of the 1881 census he was living at 69 Tannochside, Bothwell, Lanarkshire with his wife, 4 sons(William 22, John 13, Hugh 8 and Henry 6) and 3 daughters (Jane 11, Sarah A. 9 and Helen J. 3).At this time his occupation was a coal miner. He died at 4am on the 22nd April 1893 in the Old Monkland Poor House aged 66. The cause of death was pneumonia and his occupation at this time was a pauper who was formerly a coal miner.Illiterate. His forename was given as John on Jane’s marriage certificate.
