Robert Franklin Farrell was said to have invented the ceramic high-voltage insulator but later sold the patent rights for a pittance. The story has never been documented or corroborated. Robert was chief mine electrician at Kopper's Coal Company at Elk Ridge on Armstrong Creek, Fayette County, West Virginia. He retired after 55 years of employment. He missed receiving the United Mine Workers hard-won National Pension by a mere six months.
