He was a famous educator having taught at Friend's School, Westfield, N.J.; Fair Hill School, Sandy Springs, Maryland and Westtown Friend's School, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. He established his own school in Alexandria, Virginia but in 1845 was induced by Friend's of Philadelphia to leave Alexandria for a year to go to Philadelphia to establish the institution now known as Friends' Central School. The minutes of the Alexandria Monthly Meeting, Virginia, state that Charles received a certificate to Indian Spring Monthly Meeting, Maryland to marry Sarah Brooke, a member of that meeting May 23, 1833.
CHARLES FARQUHAR (1800-1844). Charles Farquhar began his adult life as a teacher. From 1821-1823 he taught at Fair Hill School in Maryland. From 1825-1826 he taught at Benjamin Hallowell's school in Alexandria, Virginia. In 1826 he entered the Medical School at the University of Pennsylvania,
Philadelphia where he was graduated in 1832. In 1833 he married Sarah Brooke, daughter of Roger Brooke of "Brooke Grove," Montgomery County, Maryland. They moved to Olney, Maryland and he died December 10, 1844.

FARQUHAR WHO WAS WHO IN AMERICA, 1897-1942, page 386 contains the following additional information on the subject: He was born at Sandy Spring, Montgomery County, Maryland September 2, 1843, the son of William Henry and Margaret Briggs Farquhar. He lived on the family farm until he was grown and was educated in common schools but principally at home. He received a Ph.D. degree from Columbia University. On May 29, 1902 he married Mary W. Milam. He served as instructor in English in 1893 and then Professor of History until 1903 at Columbia University. He was Secretary for the Washington Society for Philosophical Inquiry. |
