Notes for Henry Hannum:
Henry Hannum (George Truman Burbridge's Grandfather)
Henry Hannum was born August 22, 1822, the youngest son of Hannah Kidwell Hannum and John Hannum. After the death of her husband in Belmont County, Ohio, she took Henry to live with relatives in Lewis County, Missouri. There, Henry met his future wife Jane. She was literally the "girl next door", as the Baxter family lived next door to the Hannums.
Henry was born 13 years after Abraham Lincoln was born and some people felt he looked a lot like Lincoln too but the resemblance seems to have ended there.Henry had a little problem with shiftlessness. He was also quite mean, according to people as close to him as his own mother. His marriage to Jane was characterized by frequent moves around Missouri, Arkansas, and Kansas. Sometimes he took Jane and his family with him, but frequently he would just leave.Henry and Jane's 10 children were born all over the place- Pike County, Garfield and Hannibal, Missouri- Pocahontas and Siloam Springs, Arkansas- Lebo and Yates Center, Kansas. His daughter Lizzie, who was George Truman Burbridge's mother, was born in 1855 in either Missouri or Arkansas, depending on which census you read.Henry was an abusive person and his children were afraid of him and felt relieved when he left home.He died at the home of his son-in-law in Osage City, Kansas on July 17, 1902 during his final excursion away from his family just one month short of his eightieth birthday.
Since none of us were there at the time, perhaps we shouldn't try to judge Henry.Obviously his reputation was poor.We can hope that there were some extenuating circumstances. He may have been overly impressionable. The country was in the midst of civil war during the prime of his life andthere was no doubt a great deal of shiftlessness and instability in most people's lives at the time. There was certainly a great deal of lawlessness in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas while his family was growing up.At least give Henry this, if it weren't for him, none of us Burbridge descendants would be here today.
