When John McNary died his estate was left to the disposition of the court of Morgan County, Illinois in 1835.The court set aside one-third of the proceeds from the sale of the land, amounting to $807.00, for the use of his widow, and directed the remaining two-thirds be invested in government lands for the minor heirs. ($50.00 was reserved for the education of the two girls)John's brother Alexander, as guardian, invested the money in government land in Pike County, Illinois.The McNarys then moved there in 1836.In 1844, Daniel D. Hicks became the guardian of Hugh and John McNary, the two monor children.Daniel D. Hicks married Jaley Ann Burbridge, a sister of Thomas B. Burbridge.Mr. Hicks was one of the founders of the First National Bank of Pittsfield, Illinois.
