Child of JABEZ FINCH and ROSANNA REYNOLDS is:
i. | JABEZ6 FINCH, b. Bet. 1785 - 1794, Clinton, Dutchess County, New York. |
96.AMOS5 FINCH (BENJAMIN4, BENJAMIN3, ISAAC2, JOHN1, ?A) was born 3 August 1751 in Crum Elbow, Dutchess County, New York, and died 1845 in Lexington, Greene County, New York.He married MARTHA PARKS ca. 1780 in Amenia, New York, daughter of JONAS PARKS and MARY ?.She was born 1760, and died 1 May 1831 in Lexington, Greene County, New York.
Notes for AMOS FINCH:
The following comments are by Paul R. Finch, Jan 21, 2005, from notes he made in 1976 after visiting the Beaches Corner Cemetery and from information taken mainly from the files of Mrs. Louis Rossi, late of Ravena, N. Y. which has been deposited in the Durham Center Museum, East Durham, N. Y. 12425 in 1965.
AMOS FINCH, b. ____ 1751, parents names unknown;
birthplace unknown, d._____ 1845, buried in beaches Corners Cemetery, Jewett (formerly Lexington heights), Greene Co. N. Y. His headstone reads: "Amos Finch, died 1845, A. 94."
He married MARTHA PARKS (Biographical Review of Delaware County New York, Boston: Biog. Rev. Pub. Co., 1895, p. 88). Her headstone stands alongside of Amos' and reads:
"Mavena (or Adena?) Finch, Dy, May 1, 1831."She is believed by Mrs. Rossi to be the daughter of Jonas Parks who served as second lieutenant of Humphrey's company on a list of officers who were elected 20 Mar. 1778 (Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New York. v.l5, p. 134, 283). She is also said to have had two brothers, Amos and Jonathan Parks.
Amos Finch is recorded as having served in the Revolutionary War (Biog. Rev., op. cit., p. 88, 189).However, he apparently received no pension (he is not to be confused with another AMOS FINCH [1754-1849] who lived in Cairo, New York, and did receive a pension, application file no. 313022, Pension Certificate no. 14633, Receipt Roll no. 13249.Mrs. Rossi believed that the receipt roll no. 13249 is actually that of the above subject Amos and not of the Amos from Cairo, but there is no proof of such an assumption. If such a receipt roll were on file it would appear that the subject Amos could have claimed a pension and that pension would have been recorded).
The Greene County records show no will or estate settlement of the subject Amos Finch of Lexington who died in 1845, but did have one for the Amos Finch of Cairo who died in 1849.Also, no land records are registered for the subject Amos in either Greene or Ulster County Records.
Census Records:
1790 (Heads of Families --- New York, 1790 Census, p. 73):
Amos Finch, Amenia Town, Dutchess Co., N. Y. 1-2-4.
Amos would have been 39 years old if born in 1751.Beside his wife he had two sons under 16 and three daughters. Amos may have married around 1780---his oldest son Jonas being born in 1782.Recorded in the same census, but living in the adjoining town of Washington were Abraham Finch, 1-1-6,
Comfort Finch, 1-1-1, John Finch, 2-3-1, and William Finch, 1-3-4.
1800 Census (Amenia, Dutchess Co., N. Y., Nat. Arch. Microfilm pub. M32, roll 21, p. 138, no. 5380),
Amos Finch: 2001040100 or 1 male 26-45; 3 males under 10; 1 female 16-26; 4 females under 10. If Amos was born in 1751 he should have been 49. The age bracket for Martha also appears to be too low.If she was the mother of Jonas, age 18, how could she be only 26? Jonas was not included in this census, neither was the other older son.The three males under 10 appear to be Benjamin (b. 1791), Amos Jr. and Abram (b. 1792).At Beaches Corners Cemetery there is a stone in the same family plot which reads: "Ira Finch, 1793".If this is their son Ira who died young in Lexington, how could the family be still listed in Amenia in 1800?
1810 Census Windham, Greene Co., N. Y., Nat. Arch. microfilm pub. M252, roll 27, p. 312): Amos Finch 03001, 31010.
Amos was probably living in the present Township of Lexington where he had resettled, and which was taken from Windham in 1813.Amos at this time would have been 59. The record shows him to be born prior to 1765-1784. Three males are shown to be born between 1795-1800 and three females born between 1800-1810.
1820 Census (Lexington, Greene Co., N. Y.Nat. Archives microfilm pub. M19, roll 110, p. 122R & 125): Amos finch 00000100001.
Amos (69) and wife are listed as being 45 and over. No children are listed. In the same census is listed Amos, Jr.: 220001 11010.
1830 Census (Lexington, Greene Co., N. Y., Nat. Arch. Microfilm pub. M19, roll 110, p. 122R & 125). Amos Finch: 0000000010000 0000000100000.
Amos (79) is shown to be between the age of 60-70 and Martha is shown to be between 50-60.Also listed in the same census is Amos Jr., 22000010000001100010000000 and Abram, 110000100000 1000100000000.
1840 Census: Not found!
According to Martha's headstone she had died May 1, 1851.If Amos was born in 1751 he would be age 89 in 1840. The 1840 Census for Lexington also shows Abraham, Benjamin, and Isaac Finch.Amos, being alone, may have been living with one of his sons.Jonas had relocated in Delaware Co, in 1855 (Biog. Rev. of Del. Co., p. 189).If Amos was visiting Jonas in 1840 he may have gone unrecorded. The 1840 census was the first one to record Revolutionary soldiers and the missing record of Amos deprives us from documenting the fact that he served in the Revolutionary War.
