to find new land.The land on which these Huguenots settled
was on the James River near Manakin, a former Indian hunting
ground.Thus was born Manakintowne, today Manakin, Va., a suburb of Richmond, Va.These hearty Frenchmen were the
backbone of France----artisans, merchants, professionals.They
farmed their land, increased their properties, and were gradually
accepted by the Virginia colonists.After worshipping in French
as a separate congregation, they eventually joined the colonial
Virginians in King William Parish and St.James Northam Parish to worship in English.
