On a visit to Holy Communion Chapel in April 2005, Howard Porter was looking for a specific pillar in the upstairs auditorium of the parish hall. At a Halloween dance in 1936, he first spied Peggy Chambers leaning against this pillar. She turned him down when he asked her to dance but later he walked her home, along with some friends. A few years later she accepted his invitation and the rest is history. They were married in 1946. - IRVINE - Bill and Fanny (181 KB)

Howard Porter and his bride Margaret Chambers - June 15, 1946 - IRVINE - Castle Irvine 2005 (713 KB)
A lot of work has been done to the old homestead in the last 30 years (see pictures below from the 1920s and 1970s) - in fact, we drove past it twice before recognizing it. Note the lines painted on the street; the A35 through Kesh carries a lot of traffic these days. Kesh is no longer a little village and the Irvines would hardly recognize it. I'm sorry I didn't take another panoramic photo from the hill above Kesh to compare with the one from 1975 (below). Definitely on the next trip! - HARVEY Reunion - McFarlands & Martins (282 KB)

Maria was born in Ireland in 1839 but wouldn't say where. They are my paternal great-great-grandparents. Both sets of their parents also came to Philadelphia. Grandmom Harvey would have been astounded. The flag was restored and mounted behind special UV protecting plexi-glas by the Union League of Philadelphia. It was formally presented to the League on Nov. 22, 2003 for inclusion in their Civil War collection. In August 2007 it was hung in the 2nd floor landing - across from George Washington's portrait. Note the patches. Originally sewn by hand, it was partially resewn by machine. The field is newer than the stripes and may have been replaced as more stars were added. - Philadelphia Irish Immigration Memorial - "Hello!" (112 KB)
Situated at Penn's Landing, this huge monument tells the story of Irish immigration after the famine. Beginning at one end with suffering and death in Ireland, immigrants head toward ships and disembark at the other end in America. It's a fascinating study of faces and body language by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. This is my favorite side of the monument: that moment of recognition between the immigrant on the ship and the friend or relative on the dock. Such a scene played out several times as my ancestors arrived in Philadelphia. See link to Memorial's website at bottom of this page. - IRVINE - St. Mary's Church, Ardess, Kesh (405 KB)
