Since completing "Footsteps - The Life Story of a Dorsetshire FOOT", I have continued to collect additional information about the Foot/Foote family and descendants. I have now over 2,600 confirmed ancestors and relations, many of whom now live in Ontario, Canada. I have traced my own branch of the Foot family, which originated in Fifehead Neville in North Dorset England, back to John ffotte who was born about 1490. The emigration to Canada of my great grandfather Samuel Foot and my great grandmother Elizabeth Bennett in the 1830s was the start of the Canadian dynasty. The reader will note that most of the Canadian branch of the family have an 'e' added to the name. I cannot be sure whether Samuel Foot himself added the 'e' or whether it was his son Walter James Foote in the late 1800s when he became more important in the township of Newcastle, Ontario. The Protestation Returns of February 1641 show that there were only 3 male Ffottes living in Fifehead Neville at that time. George Ffotte, his son Robert Ffootte and a Henry Ffootte. Some information I obtained from the Tudor Rolls in the House of Lords. All new information is contained in thisAddendumto "Footsteps the Life Story of a Dorsetshire Foot".I would be most grateful if any reader/contributor can add to the information I have gathered. The reader will note that the effect of four successive generations of the Foot family marrying cousins has resulted in a most complex family tree. The General Report is the most interesting as it contains my notes, comments and the Wills of several on my ancestors. It is a most significant 'social history' of the North Dorset area over the past 300 years. I have more recently made contact with the descendants of James Foot who emigrated to Australia in 1840 and who later moved to New Zealand. Additionally I have also found a branch of the Sturminster Newton Foots who emigrated to Newfoundland in the mid 1800s and became fishermen and farmers in that area. This page updated November 2001. Leonard G. Foot
