Notes for GILES NELSON FOSTER:
In 1860 Giles was 26 years old and working as a carpenter in Thomasville, Davidson County, NC. His brother, Hiram, aged 18 was living with him and working as an apprentice.
On 16 Apr, 1862, Giles enlisted as a private in Co. A, 10th Battalion, N. C., Heavy Artillery for the war. He was appointed Artificer 01 Jul. 1862. Transfered to Co. A, 2nd Regt, Confederate Engineer Troops during August 1863.
He was not found in the 1870 census, probably because of moving with his family to Tennessee at about that time.
An 1877 map of Denmark, TN shows a house on Main Street belonging to G. N. Foster. The 1880 census shows him living in Denmark and working as an undertaker. His wife had died. With him lived one servant, a widow named Emma Bond, aged 48, who did cooking for him.
In 1881 he bought an additional adjacent lot. He died in Denmark and was buried at the Denmark Presbyterian Church.

In 1870, Thomas and his family were living Jerusalem Township, Davie County, NC. He was a carpenter. Sarah Banks was a daughter of his stepfather, John Banks, before he married Thomas' mother. Shortly afterward, Thomas and his family along with his mother and step-father moved to Gibson County, TN.
