Notes for Samuel Freeman:
After many years of trying to locate Samuel Freeman in North Carolina, today the 12th of October 1988,I finally found him.He was in Beaufort County in the census year of 1810, (Film #337912).His name is difficult to read but it is him.He is the only Freeman in the county. He is over the age of 45, married to Mary who is 32 years old and they have 3 daughters under the age of 10.
Samuel died between the years 1813 and 1820.I have been unable to get much information to this point but as you will later see, I do have information on his wife Mary.Samuel possibly died during the War of 1812 but I have a list of Freemans who served in the Militia and he is not included.
Mary raised all five children alone. She lived on a farm near the road between the town of Washington and Chocowinity, North Carolina. She owned a Negro Woman named Dinah who she gave to her daughter Sarah (Freeman) Denby.Mary lived her last years with the above mentioned Sarah.Mary made several land transaction including selling and buying land around her property. Mary and Samuel must have moved into the Chocowinity area shortly after 1800.The church records in the TRINITY EPISCOPAL CHURCH in Chocowinity, Beaufort County, North Carolina contain Communications of Mary and some of her children. This old church still stands at the cross roads in that town.

John S.Freeman was born 27 Sep 1813.He was the fifth child born to Samuel and Mary Freeman. He was born and raised in Beaufort County, Chocowinity District, North Carolina. He Married Annis Harding about 1837 in Beaufort County.
In 1849 John S. and Annis moved to Griggs Township, Van Buren County, Arkansas with their six children:Sarah Jane (12), James Henry (10), Mary Ann (Polly) (8), John C.Calhoun (6), Margaret Elizabeth (3), and Darcus Luraney (1).
It took two to three months to make the trip. They started the trip in late summer or early fall, when the ground was firm and there were few or no mosquitoes through the swamps.
The North Arkansas Trail or Road (for a long, long time known as the Military Road) crossed the Mississippi River at Memphis Tennessee, then made a sharp turn to the North, West, and then South to keep out of the swamps as much as possible, finally reaching the White River at a point where Batesville was afterward built. From there it followed a general Northwest direction, not so very far from the east bank of the White River, until a fine ford was struck in low water, some distance above what is now known as Denton's Ferry.
Research in the past year has shown that John Samueland his family moved many times.I find no Homestead records but the Marion County Court House burned.
In 1850 the family was in Griggs Township, Van Buren County with all his family present.
In1860 the family was in Tomahawk Township, House #403, Family #396, Searcy County.Tomahawk Township is in the north central part of Searcy County bordering Marion County. In fact, part of this township was changed to Marion County in 1873.
John's wife Annis died 29 Nov 1862.This was during the Civil War.They were living in Searcy County. Nathaniel Starkey was the youngest child at the age of four, two years later, 24 Aug 1864, John married Nancy Cypert who was 22 years old.She was the widow of Henry L. Cypert, who was killed in the Civil War at Little Rock Arkansas 3 May 1863.She had two small daughters, Henrietta and Safrona. The children were raised by their Grandfather William T.Cypert who lived in the Big Flat Township of Searcy County, Arkansas. Henrietta later married Dr. William Bransford Lack.
In 1870 the family was in Union Township, Marion County.East of Yellville near Hall Mountain or Onset.
In 1880 the family was in Buffalo Township, Marion County. This area is now Crooked Creek Township or Rea Valley or Hand Valley.Their neighbors were the Foster Hand family and the Thomas Cox family. This is between Hand Valley and Old Buffalo City which is west of the White River.Nathaniel Starkey is now married to Martha Caroline Tilley and living in Union Township near Hall Mountain (Onset).
In 1888 the family was in Onset, Crooked Creek Township, Marion County. This is east of Yellville which is now called Rea Valley or Hand Valley.John S.received a Post Card from Washington D.C. at this address.
John S. died in his home at the mouth of Crooked Creek, where it empties into the White River. He was fondly known in the area as "Uncle" John Freeman. The Family Bible and Shotgun passed to NathanielStarkey Freeman at his death. He ask that they stay in the Freeman family line. The Bible was passed to Nathaniel Starkey's son Timothy who died 19 Jul 1966, it was then in the possession of Zoorett Freeman, his wife at Timbo, Arkansas, She passed away in 1993.It then passed toJerome Freeman of Big Flat Arkansas. It is now in the home of Hazel Lee in Timbo, AR.
