Notes for Jonas Wood:
Jonas came to Huntington from Oram in the parish of Halifax, County York.He was called "Jonas Wood Oram" to distinguish him from his cousin, Jonas Wood Halifax. He had the title "Mr."
Jonas Wood was living at Springfield MA in 1636, at Wethersfield CT in 1637, Stamford CT in 1641, all with his father Edmund, and from there went to Hempstead Long Island. In 1644, he was one of the patentees of Hempstead.(Hoff notes that Jonas Wood and John Ogden were the only two of Hempstead's five patentees on Stamford records.)He was on the list of proprietors of Hempstead in 1647.
Jonas was Deputy from Huntington, and on 17 May 1658 he was at New Haven. In 1665, he was a member of 1st Assembly, Hempstead.
Jonas Wood, William Rogers and Thomas Wilkes of Huntington made the second or "Eastern Purchase."It extended eastward from the First Purchase to the Nissequogue (Smithtown) River, and its bounds were even more loosely defined than were those of the First Purchase. The Indians reserved liberty to hunt and plant therein, and in addition to a few garments, were given "seven quarts of licker and aleven ounces of powther."Overlapping boundaries of various Indian purchases caused many disputes; the east boundary of the Eastern Purchase overlapped with land on the west side of the river that Richard Smith had purchased from the Indians.
