He attended theUniversity of Missouri in 1928. Living in Washington,
DC in 1999 at 3001 Veasey Terrace, NW, Apt. 220,Washington, D.C. 20008.
In letter to Stewart Galt dated February 16, 1998, advised as follows, "...changed my name from Noel to Henry (Noel-Noel was a popular night club singer in Paris in the 30s.)"

" Dr. Henry M. Noel
Dr. Noel was born in Boston, Ma in 1908 but considered himself a native of St. Louis. He lived in France for 15 years and graduated from the National School of Oriental Languages at the University of Paris in 1933.He then went to Japan as a correspondent for the Petite Parisien, contributing to various publications and publishing several books while there.
In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in many capacities in the intelligence corps.He served in Governor's Island, Panama, New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. He was discharged in 1946, and subsequently received a MA from the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD from the University of Montpellier.He was united in marriage to Barbara Schuschard on May 24, 1956 in Washington, DC.
He moved here (ND) in March of this year from Washington, DC, where he lived and worked for the past fifty years.Dr. Noel was a professor emeritus of French language and literature at American University, and had been a cataloguer of Japanese publications at the Library of Congress.
His survivors include his wife, the former Barbara Schuschard of Berlin, Germany; a stepson, Dr. George S. Hsu of Elgin, ND; two stepdaughters, Joan Stanley-Baker of Taiwan, and Katherine Haas of Annapolis, MD; a niece, Noel Gayne Reynolds of Eureka, CA; two nephews; thirteen grandchildren and two great-grand children."
Service of Remembrance took place at the Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Elgin, ND on December 19, 2001.Military Honors were performed by the George W. Snook American Legion Post #246, Elgin, ND.Interment at Zion Lutheran Cemetery."
