Notes for BLANCHE LURA BEEKS:
Blanche went to school at Sand Springs until the sixth or seventh grade.
Blanche learned to play the piano by ear as did most of her sisters.Entertainment had to be live in those days so people had to learn to perform if they were going to enjoy dancing, singing and listening to music.
When Blanche and Jim Fuhrman became engaged, Jim gave her a garnet engagement ring.
The young couple married on September 8, 1909, at the home of Blanche's sister, Luella Beeks Miller, 210 W. Putman, in Goldendale.During the forties Jim gave Blanche a diamond ring.
While the family lived at the Chamberlin Place, Blanche tried to learn to drive a car.
Church was an important part of Blanche's young life as her father was a lay minister for the Church of Christ.Sunday school and church were held at the school.
When Jim died in 1959, Blanche remained on the ranch. Her son, Bus, delivered mail on her route so he was able to check on her. Also by that time the ranch had electricity (1950), telephone (1959), and radio, which was battery operated until electricity was installed, but there has never been a TV.Blanche said the animals, trains, and the wind helped keep her company. Many family members came to visit and enjoy the quiet and slower pace of life, not to mention Grandma's big farm breakfasts, home made bread and cinnamon rolls, and the big pot of beans on the old wood cook stove.

Notes for JAMES DANIEL FUHRMAN:
James Fuhrman was born near Squaw Creek, a tributary of Rock Creek, which flows into the Columbia River in Klickitat County, Washington.
Jim went to Catholic school at St Mary’s Academy in The Dalles, Oregon
At twelve years of age, Jim helped trail sheep up to the MT. Adams summer grazing range. He and some of his brothers spent the summer herding the sheep and camping in the mountains.
Jim helped build the big red barn at the Rock Creek Sheep Company Ranch. He was always quite proud of his contribution. The barn is still in use today (1999).
The details of Jim's life from thirteen to seventeen years of age are vague, but this we know: Jim was almost thirteen when his father died in December of 1904.In 1905 his Mother sold the Rock Creek Sheep Company Ranch and they moved to Goldendale to the area south of town where the Public Utility District office is now located. At some point they moved to Warwick, which is about twenty miles west of Goldendale, near a school that is still standing and has been converted to a home.
We assume Jim knew his future wife, Blanche Beeks, as a child as they lived only five or six miles from each other. At some point when Jim lived in Goldendale or Warwick, romance blossomed.Their daughter, Vera, remembers her mother telling about how she cried when Jim had to go home after a date.No doubt it was a long time between dates as Goldendale was a twenty-mile trip and Warwick was a forty-mile trip from Goodnoe Hills all by horseback or buggy.
Jim was a wheat rancher and rented acreage until 1920 when he and Blanche purchased the Bert Chamberlin Ranch in Goodnoe Hills.
In 1934, during the Great Depression, this ranch was lost through a dispute with the bank and repossessed by the bank. The family moved to the Clyde Story place and then to the Ellsworth place in 1935.In 1936 they moved to the Chamberlin Flat Ranch, where the family continues to gather.
Jim worked on the county road crew and was responsible for the road maintenance of what is now Highway 14, which runs east from Highway 97 above the Columbia River along the hills on the way to the Ranch and the Chamberlin-Goodnoe Road.In those days that was quite a task as the road was full of curves, narrow, and had very steep and deep drop-offs down the hills.
On the ranch he raised beef cattle, a few milk cows, and some alfalfa and wheat hay.He milked the cows for house milk, cream, and butter. The extra separated sour cream was sent by railroad to Portland, Oregon, to a creamery.
During WWII, about 1943, the family, Jim, Blanche, Maxine, Marian, and Darrell, moved to Malin, Oregon, where Jim's sister Margaretta Fuhrman Jacob and her husband, Joe, lived, and worked in their potato crop. They returned to the ranch in 1944, where Jim continued to farm.
Jim became ill with cancer in 1959 and went to Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Washington, where he passed away on June first of that year at the age of sixty-seven.
