Gardner 630 Third St. NW New Philadelphia,Ohio 44663 (330) 343-4733 | George Gardner was born near Baltimore, Maryland in 1787.George was the youngest of the 19 children born to William and Milkah (Chaney) Gardner.He married Catherine Dorsey in 1808.They came to Muskingum County, Ohio with his older brother John Gardner about 1812.They laid out the town of Rehoboth in what is now Perry County, Ohio.George was licensed to preach in the Methodist-Episcopal church in 1815 and was the among the first circuit riding preachers in this part of Ohio.George and Catherine had 11 children, the first two born in Maryland and the rest born in Ohio.Between 1830 and 1850 the family lived in Licking Co. Ohio.About 1850 they moved to Henry Co. Iowa.Catherine died in 1869.George lived in Iowa with his children until returning to Licking Co. Ohio where he lived with his daughter Rachel and her husband John Robison until Rev. George died in 1885 at the age of 97.
