2.ADAM2 HAYS (JOHANNES1) was born 1703 in New Castle, Delaware, and died March 1789 in Lower Frankford Twp, Cumberland, PA.He married CHARITY DENISTON, daughter of JOHN DENISTON and MARY (THOMPSON?). Notes for ADAM HAYS: The original genealogical research was done by Adam's g-grandson, John Hayes (1837-1921) which can be found in Dickinson College Library.He concludes that Adam Hays was the son of Johannes De Haes.The de Haes family came to Delaware in 1652 from New York as a result of a short war between the Swedes who were the original settlers of Delaware and the Dutch who wanted to expand their territory. Adam Hays settled in Frankford Twp, Cumberland Co PA in 1734, coming from New Castle, Delaware.He was a member of Big Springs Presbyterian Church.In 1748, he was commissioned to set-up a local militia to protect his section of Pennsboro Twp. (now Frankford) from Indian raids during the French & Indian Wars.He died at age 86 and his will was probated in Cumberland Co.shows 250 A, 2 slaves and $2,000 Adam's will dated September 27, 1785 shows daughter Charity unmarried at that time.Big springs Presbyterian Church rouster of 1789 Lists Adam still alive at age 86. Notes for ADAM HAYS: "Peoples Advocate & press" 11/20/1889 Vol. 37 #28 States that around 1827 the Hays brothers (Adam and John) purchased 35 acres in Lebo area and built Charlotte [later Oad Grove ] furnace.
