Notes for Margaret Nancy Cromartie:
"Among those lost to the clan was Margaret Cromartie Shaw, and her husband William Shaw, Arranite.By fine-tooth combing the state of Mississippi and through the courtesy of a local post master, a list of some of the descendans of Margaret Cromartie Shaw was obtained, then followed records galore:a complete list of their descendants, stories of the pioneers, chronicles of the clan, and such data bearing upon William and Ruhamah Cromarty, their ancestors; also copies of old letters received from those charming letter writers -- the Scotts of the Black River and South River sections. The letter written by Flora ShawColvin, genealogist, was one received from this source. In a letter received from Miss M. F. Compton, much interesting data is given. She says in part: 'My Grandfather, William Shaw, and his wife, Margaret Cromartie Shaw, moved from Tennessee to Mississippi in 1800, riding on horse back, sleeping at night in Indian camps; there were 10 or 12 men in the party; my grandmother, with an infant, was the only woman in the party.Their slaves and household goods were sent down the Mississippi River on a flat boat.It was in the day before steamboats.I am sure my grandmother was a wonderful woman. She was left a widow in a new country. She had a large number of cattle. In order to know her calves all cows were milked. She with her cook, washwoman, weaver, calves after gods and goddesses and told her little children their history. She was a fine historian. My grandmother was related to Bishop Doane."
