Services for David C. Gladney, a retired chemical engineer who worked on several pioneering nuclear projects, were held today at the E. B. Laughlin Funeral Home, 3310 W. Liberty Ave.Mr. Gladney of 490 Mapleton Ave., Mt. Lebanon, died Thursday at Magee-Women's Hospital.He served in an executive capacity with the Manhattan Project for the development of the atomic bomb during World War II and for the E. I DuPont De Nemours and Company.Mr. Gladney also worked as a power design engineer on the
AEC H-bomb project.He was general works manager with the Chapman Valve Mfg. Co. of Massachusetts from 1952 until 1960 when he joined the Blaw-Knox Co. of Pittsburgh.Mr. Gladney was construction superintendent of Blaw-Knox's chemical plant division when he retired.A graduate of the University of Missouri and Western New England College, he was a member of the South Minister Presbyterian Church, Mt. Lebanon, the Masonic organization, Royal Order of Jesters and the American Society of Chemical Engineers.Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary F. Gladney; a daughter, Mrs. Charles W. Caldwell; a son, George; and his mother, Mrs. Mary Duncan Gladney.The family suggests contributions to the Allegheny County Chapter of the American Cancer Society.Burial was in Mt. Lebanon Cemetery. He is an artist, taught Art at Washington University, St. Louis from Sept. 1949 until June 1960, is a graduate of Amherst, class of 1928, and the University of London, class of 1932, in Fine Arts.He was in the 82d Airborne Division in WW II from 1942 until 1945, was with it in the European campaign, climbed from the ranks to First Lieutenant during the fighting which finally landed him and his division in Berlin.
Graves Gladney, a St. Louis artist and sportsman, died Wednesday, March 24, 1976, during heart surgery at Barnes Hospital.
Mr. Gladney, 68, came to St. Louis in the late 1940s after working for several years in New York as a free-lance illustrator.
In 1949, Mr. Gladney became an instructor at the Washington University School of Fine Arts.He left that post in 1961.
Mr. Gladney is survived by his wife, Mrs. Nancy Meeks Gladney, and their two children, Hope and Andrew, all of Clayton.He is also survived by three children from a previous marriage, Mrs. Vanda Nohinek of Shawnee Mission, Kans,; Mrs. Natalie Kekeisen of Creve Coeur and Frank Y. Gladney II of Urbana, Ill., and two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Gladney Wells and Mrs. Lucianna Gladney Ross, of St. Louis.
