Notes for MATTHEW ORR:
Mathew is buried at St. Paul Cemetery in Clinton County, Indiana. This is near Scircleville, Indiana. He was a farmer.
Matthew was born in Coshocton County, Ohio and at eleven (11) years began the life of a drover, which he followed until grown.Later he engaged in Canal boating. He came to Clinton County, Indiana in 1839, when that area was a wilderness. He accumulated considerable property owning at his death 1,245
acres of Johnson Township land.He could have purchased Lafayette and all it included, when he first arrived for $300.00.
He was a Jackson Democrat, and held the first trusteeship of Johnson Township. He held the first public office in his county.
Matthew died on March 20, 1870 and Armina his wife died in 1903.On their land the first school in this area was built in 1844.It was a log building, erected by William Burgett, Matthew Orr, and Isaac McLelland, from their own private resources. The first teacher was Peter Stewers;hired by the three for $10.00 per month and his board.
Matthew Orr is accredited for building a store and a saloon next door. This area was known as Burgett's Corner.Dale Orr had a page out of the store ledger, December 23, 1863, when Matthew and Elizabeth ran the store. This was when they were first married. This page was in his Matthew's handwriting and contained an account of Nathan Orr, giving the items and prices of the purchases.
After Matthew's death, his wife Armina lived on what became known as the "Granny Orr" farm.On this farm is an old cemetery and some of the family is buried there. Both Matthew and Armina Orr are buried in St. Paul Cemetery about a mile from the old farm. They have a very tall marker on their graves.
These stories are told by Dale Orr, the son of John Orr to Dorsey Verd Orr.
Matthew Orr of Ohio sent a person with gold and silver to purchase land in Indiana but the man traded the money for script which was at a discount. He then bought the land with the script, keeping the money that was left for himself.
In Indiana the Orr's had a bull dog which used to drive their hogs to market. One of the boys was returning with the money from the sale of the hogs when two men attempted to rob him.Fortunately the dog was able to attack the men and drive them off.
On his farm there was wind (winding) mill. The neighbors would gather there to fan their grain.
One time Armina Shaw Orr was alone with the children, one of the smallest fell into the well. She quickly tied a rope to one of the smallest girls and lowered her into the well and she was able to save the baby.Grandmother Orr said it was the hardest thing she ever had to do as the little girl was very frightened and had to be forced to go down into the well.
The Orr boys had a race horse which had won all the races for miles around and they could get none to bet with them. They were able to paint him black so no one could recognize him and did all right again.

Notes for ARMINIA SHAW:
Told by Addie Orr Bowman
When Matthew Elijah Orr and Armina Orr first moved from Ohio to Indiana in 1839, Indians came to the house and she took two children, Jerry and Nathan, to hide until Great-grandfather came home. The Indians had camped on the creek north of their home.He went to talk to them using sign language. He told them of finding an Indian's body in a tree trunk and burying it.They were very grateful and said they were out gathering herbs and bark for their year's supply of medicine.
