Notes for John Floyd Gothard, Jr.:
John is the author of this genealogy.
As best as I can tell as of this date (December, 2003) the Gothards moved across America as follows:
The first record I find is of George Gothard in South Carolina around 1790
George and others moved to Smiths Crossing, Rhea County, Tennessee about 1810
John C. Gothard, the son of George, moved from Rhea County to Gibson County Tennessee between 1860 and 1880. This move was the result of the hard feelings soldiers who fought for the Confederacy were exposed to after the war. John C. returned to Rhea County about 1870 where he lived the rest of his life.
Millard Filmore "Phil" Gothard, son of John C., moved from Gibson County to Sebastian County, Arkansas (via Missouri) before 1900. One child, Clarence Dean Gothard was born in Joplin Missouri in 1885.
John Floyd Gothard, the son of Clarence Dean, moved to Wheatland California about 1920 and married Arta Pauline Alexander. They moved with their son, John Jr. to the Los Angeles area about 1941. This move was to accomidate the fact that John Sr. expected to be drafted into WW 2 - his wife's parents, lived in the Los Angeles area and Arta Pauiline planned to stay with them for the duration.
John grew up in the San Fernando Valley, California and married Joyce Helen Johnson in April of 1963. They moved to El Paso, Texas in 1964 where John served on active duty with the Army until 1966. Upon seperation from the Army they moved back to Southern California (Sylmar, California) where their son Scott was born in 1966.
