John Read (son of William Read and Lucy Henage) was born 1598, and died 1685.He married Sarah.

Came to America with the Great Fleet in 1630. In 1643 or 1644 he went with Rev. Mr. Newman nd his church to Rehoboth. He was a man of large property for those times, and held the office of Constable, the chief executive office in the town. His gravestone is standing in Seekonk old burying groun, inscribed "J.R., aet. 87, D.S. 1685."
