Notes for Charles Gurney:
Information about Charles Gurney and his family comes from a letter from L. Gordon Aslet (Uncle Gen) to Mrs Doris Poole in her files. Charles Gurney kept the Seven Kings Hotel (Ilford?) in the North Eastern suburbs of London. The Pidoux children visited it when staying in London with their Aslet grandparents. The letter states "The Seven Kings Hotel did not have any connection with Arthur Gurney. It was built specially for Charles, who lived in a cottagee along side whilst it was being built." In response to some question from Mrs Poole, Uncle Gen responds "I was always a bit puzzled who Samuel Gurney was. Arthur had a big country house at Stratford, Essex and in the centre of the High Street there was a statue of Samuel Gurney but I cannot remember the dates on the plinth. My Aunt Frances always used to say that the Gurneys came from the Mrs Elizabeth Fry side of the Dudley family.
