Notes for Clara Tomlin:
Clara Tomlin, according to notes made by her grandson John L. Pidoux, was the youngest of a very large family. According to Daisy Fell and Aunt Jessie, Clara Tomlin's father was a bell founder in Whitechapel, a Freeman of the City and a member of the Girdlers' Guild. She married John Pidoux in 1871 at the age of 20 and had a number of children some of whom died in infancy. When John Pidoux died in 1891 at 42, Clara took in a lodger, William Betts, by whom she had two daughters, Daisy and Rose. The family lived at 96 Shaftesbury Street, Hoxton. On Daisy's birth certificate the information supplied by William Betts as the father describes him as a printer journeymen and gives the mother's name as Clara Betts, formerly Tomlin. However, there is no record that she married Betts, who was an alcoholic and proved a very bad "husband".Clara took her children and left, leaving no address and having no further contact with him. She kept her former name of Pidoux. According to Daisy Fell and other accounts,Clara Tomlin Pidoux brought up her children well. The older ones had to leave home early to help support the younger children. The eldest, Clara, according to Daisy Fell's account, became a cook. John, my grandfather, became a self-taught professional musician. Jessie, also according to Daisy Fell, was educated at the Lady Hollingbury School for Young Gentlewomen. Her education was paid for by the Girdler's Company which was the City Guild that her grandfather Tomlin belonged to. Jessie first worked as a court dressmaker and then trained as a nurse, became an SRN and went into private practice. Joe took his stepfather's name of Betts in order to enlist in the army although he was under age. Alf, Jim and Harry were at home and Harry, the youngest son, was educated as a charity scholar at the Bluecoat School and had a lifetime career as a civil servant in the Treasury Department. Jim trained as a chef. Alfred was a carpenter and joiner.
Rose Betts was "a brilliant student" but developed a mental illness in her teens and spent much of her life in institutions. Daisy Betts was married twice. Her first husband was killed in action in WW I. She married again in the 1920's and had a daughter Pamela or Patricia who went to California. Doris Poole's file contained a business card for a Terri Landau, "for the best in astrology", with a note in Uncle John's handwriting that this was Mrs. Patricia Newman, daughter of Daisy Betts. However, according to Daisy Fell, the daughter was called Pamela Garrett. We have no record of her husband's name.
My aunt Phyllis Pidoux remembers her grandmother as a feisty old lady, very modern in her ways and dress, with piercing bright blue eyes and very strictly against alcoholic drink. Seeing my grandfather having a bottle of beer with his supper she would admonish him "There's a devil in that bottle, Jack".
