Notes for Joseph Pidoux:
Joseph Pidoux enlisted under the name of Betts, underage at 16, in the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays) and served in South Africa in the Boer War. This was a cavalry regiment and Aunt Phyllis Bull has photos of him in his uniform and of the regiment with their horses. Joe married a Boer wife and stayed in South Africa in Johannesburg and according to Daisy Fell, was a police officer. At the time of his brother John Pidoux's wife's death (i.e.) when my grandmother died, Joe began writing to my grandfather and to my mother Doris Poole and at that time he was retired, a widower and lived in Rhodesia where he ran a small store in the bush, trading with the native people. Aunt Jessie visited him there several times.
