Notes for Kenneth Weston Papps:
Pte Kenneth Weston Papps; No 30918; 25th Battalion 2nd NZEF, paid the supreme sacrifice in August 1942.
At the time of his enlistment, he became an NCO with 3rd Echelon and was stationed for a time at Cairo. The then Sgt Papps sought reversion to Pte rank in order to get into action as he felt he was not doing enough for his country in his former position.Later, on active service, he was wounded and spent a time of recuperation before returning to service.
He was eventually taken prisoner at Tobruk and it was while abroad one of three Italian troop ships en route for a prison camp in Italy, that he lost his life at sea when the ships were torpedoed, ironically by British submarines.
His family were kept under the misapprehension by the Italian authorities, for almost a year, that he was alive in a prison camp, even to the extent of accepting food parcels and mail during that time.
