Notes for Laura Isobel Hall:
Laura was a steno at Cockshutt Plow Company with Amy (Source: Henderson's Calgary Directory 1913), then a steno at CPR (Source: Henderson's Calgary Directory 1920 and 1924).She worked for the CPR's Department of Natural Resouces in a building next to the station.
Laura and Leslie became involved in the Scouting movement - Laura was Guide Commissioner for Calgary until she retired in 1937.Leslie became Provincial Secretary, and was with the Scouts when King George and Queen Elizabeth visited Calgary in 1939.The Scouts were used for crowd control, to keep the car route open, and Shirley has a picture of the royal couple with Leslie in the background.
They built a house on 29 Avenue N.W., Calgary after the war and lived there until Leslie was transferred to Winnipeg, then to Moose Jaw, then back to Winnipeg. They lived in an apartment building by the Assiniboine River until they retired to Victoria. One of their favourite places was Point No Point and they often went there for lunch or afternoon tea.
Their daughter Shirley remembers spending most holidays in either Scout or Guide camps near Calgary (this was back in the depression when men had two weeks holiday a year). One memorable camp was on the banks of Bragg Creek, where they had a cloudburst at night--the camp chief had parked her tent on a path leading downhill to the creek -- and was washed out in the middle of the night.Murray [Hall] was at that camp, too.
