Notes for Cynthia Dillin:
Cynthia Dillin, the daughter of William Dillin and Matilda Hawkins was born in Connecticut on March 3, 1801.Her father brought his family to Brownville, NY in 1801.He had arrived in 1800 so it is likely he delayed bringing his family until after Cynthis's birth. In the "Genealogical and Family History" pg 180, on some crossing, "Mrs. William Dillin and a daughter, Cynthia, were precipitated into the water from a boat while crossing to Brownville, and narrowly excaped drowning. At first they were supposed to be dead, but finally were resuscitated."
On May 21, 1817, Cynthia Dillin married Jeremiah Woodman.Harry Dillin, Cynthia's younger brother recalled being at the wedding. At the time, he was six years old.Ten children were born to this union.Land records reveal that Jeremiah Woodman owned forth-four acres in the Torn of Lyme and later bought 50 acres in the Town of Pamelia, Jefferson County, New York.It is assumed that all of their children were born in Jefferson County. On December 8, 1850, Jeremiah Woodman was awarded Bounty Land as a veteran of the War of 1812.From "Charlie Campbell's Recollections" printed in the Republican Observer:"Home is the dearest spon on earth and some of my most cherished memories are of my log cabin home on grandfather's homestead in Richland County on Dayton Ridge. My grandfather Jeremiah Woodman, and his wife Cynthia, came from New York State in the east (illegible) by boat. They bought along a horse and buggy and when they landed at Milwaukee they hitched up old Dobbin and bumped along the rest of the way to Richland Center. The Woodmans had eight children, all married but one, and shortly they came to Wisconsin with their families.Grandfather bought each one 40 acres of land with the exception of their youngest son (illegible) under the parental roof, and my mother was given (illegible). Most of the Woodman descendants are in far away places not but there remains a good sprinkling of them in Richland County. It is very clear in my thoughts of the every day happenings of my family from the time I was four years old, that is 88 years ago"(Note:Charlie passed away in 1954.")
After Jeremiah's death, Cynthia returned to New York.It is possible that she made the trip with her son, Samuel D. Woodman when he returned in 1866.On June 4, 1878, Cynthia Dillin applied for a widow's pension and by that time she was a resident of Wolfe Island, Ontario.Cynthia died on August 9, 1883 and her remains were laid to rest at St. Lawrence United Church Cemetery. The Cemetery is on the south side of the island and is situated just a few hundred feet from the St. Lawrence River.A pillar gravestone marks her grave and on it is written"In memory of Cynthia Woodman, died Aug. 12, 1883.Aged 83 years."
