Foreword
I acknowledge the significant contributions made by others, but must take full responsibility for any conclusions in this compilation in order not to attribute incorrectly to any one else.
Having stated the above, let me summarize my conclusion. I have come to the conclusion that we can not at this time, with a reasonable degree of certainty, identify the father of Colonel Andrew Hampton. There are several excellent possibilities, namely: Noah Hampton, Andrew Hampton (bothers and son sons of John Hampton) and even possibly a descendant from the Andrew Hampton (brother of John Hampton) line. Many family researchers have chosen Noah or Andrew his brother. There is some evidence to substantiate all of these claims. There is however, in my opinion, not satisfactorily conclusive evidence for any of these propositions.
Some will argue that one proposition or the other is cited and/or quoted many more times and therefore must be the correct conclusion. I would caution that no matter how many times something incorrect is repeated, it does not make it correct or accurate.
It also is my conclusion that the family of Andrew Hampton and Margaret Cummin has not been thoroughly researched. In particular, their son "John" has not been well researched. Anyone doing research of this family will find the name of "John Hampton" integral and there were many of them. I am not at all comfortable that we have the various Johns Hampton identified and/or documented.
The following is the information I have gathered so far for this family. It is divided into two generalcategories. A database or index of names, which is an accumulation of information I have encountered. Even though much of it is unverified, I have chosen to publish it in the hope that it will be of assistance to someone else and their research, but caution that it is unverified and therefore should not be relied upon.
The second part is a "book" which includes the information I feel is more reliable and most has been verified or sourced, unless stated otherwise. This is information that in my opinion is reasonably reliable. I am compiling it into this book as "My Hampton Ancestors." Others have made it abundantly clear that their Hampton Ancestors [even though they appear to be the same people] are not my Hampton Ancestors. This can be accounted for in ones interpretation of the facts and secondly in ones logical conclusion drawn from the best available information. I gladly share the information I have and hope others will share theirs with me. I do not have a vested interest to protect or desired outcome for my family history. My goal is not change anyones mind, rather it is to the best of my ability to accurately trace "my ancestors," any help in doing so is most appreciated, including corrections, modifications and additions.
