Notes for Benjamin Kaplan:
My uncle Bennie was a character.Everybody loved him.He sponsered the whole family when they came to California. We stayed at their house until our house was ready.I used to love going there. It was on Sweetzer, in L.A.
He was a butcher and was very generous with everyone. My aunt Molly was the love of his life. They were cousins and fell in love when they were young.I just found out that Harry Metter, my aunt Molly's brother named his grandson Joshua Ben Tzion (Yan) after my Uncle Benny.Joshua is Toby Metter Yan's son.
From my cousin Rose's daughter Kathleen:
My story about my Grandfather Ben Kaplan:
Growing up my grandparents lived with us and some of the things I remember about my grandfather was the way he would kiss my grandma Molly on the back of her neck while she cooked or did the dishes. You could just feel the love they had for each other. As a little girl my grandpa and I would go for walks and I remember a certain walk to Macy's store.I left my purse there by mistake and we had to walk all the way back for it,and I still got an ice cream. My grandfather was known for his kidding around with everyone.I also remember that my grandfather could be seen eating a banana any time of the day.He had the best stories.I also remember driving with him when he delivered meat from the Butcher shop, we went to Danny Kaye's house and Lucille Ball's house and even though I never got to meet them,it was still the best time in the world.Grandma would tell me how funny it was to wait for grandpa to come home from work because she said she never knew what kind of car he would come home with.He loved his Cadillacs.I sometimes feel sorry for those who never really got to know him...he was the most special being in the world.I am so lucky I got to call him Grandpa!
I have to add a memory.Uncle Benny got a brand new Buick and took us all for a drive.I was in the back seat standing next to my cousin Eddie (no room to sit) and I threw up from car-sickness.Then Eddie threw up ... my poor uncle Benny, they never could get the odor out of the car, he had to sell it.I used to tell my grandkids about this, that my Uncle Benny had to throw out his brand new Buick because I got car sick.
