THOMAS ALFRED DALTON
1900-1976
Tom was the 8th of eleven children born to Richard and Mary Ann Dalton. He was born November 4 in Tottenham, Middlesex not far from London England. As a boy he was sent off to Ardingly College in West Sussex, England to get an education.Ardingly was a private boys school.
In 1915 at the age of 15, (and because he lied about his age) he enlisted in the 'London Scottish Regiment' and went over to France to fight in World War I. I don't believe he saw a lot of action but he was wounded at one point.
A few years later he immigrated to Canada and found himself in British Columbia. Some of his other brothers and sisters also immigrated but I do not know if they came with him, before him or after him.
It was in British Columbia that he met Joanne Osborne, a Scottish girl, whose family had also immigrated. They got married in Corbin, BC January 5, 1926.He was 26 years old and she was 18.
My grandfather got involved in many things in his early career, he was a fox farmer for while, and he was also a forest ranger for a short time.He then got on with the 'Singer Sewing' machine company and worked as a salesman/repairman for them.It was about this time that he was based in Calgary, AB.
His only child was born in October of 1929 in Calgary, Alberta. She was Shirley Joan Dalton. For approximately the next ten years they lived in Calgary and some time in the early forties moved east to Ontario.Tom and Joanne ran a restaurant in Aurora, ON for a short few years and eventually Tom got himself yet another business probably in the late fifties. This was the 'Compact Ladder Company'.He was the owner and president.
He ran this business until his retirement. One of his greatest loves…horses and horse racing… was realized when visiting a sister in Saratoga Springs, NY.He got involved as an owner and raced standerbreds until about 1964.At this time he switched over to thoroughbred racing and horses racing on the Ontario Jockey Club tracks for about 10 years.
My grandfather was a bit of an entreupener. He loved to gamble a little. He enjoyed his whiskey and he absolutely adored his wife and child and grand children. He was a smoker and as a result got cancer. It was the cause of his death in 1976 at Princess Margaret Hospital in Toronto, ON where he had been living in an apartment since 1960.
